Blepharoplasty

Your eyes are the most expressive part of your face. The eyes and mouth areas are the first parts of the face we notice about each other. With age, eyelids sag and droop, with bags and bulges appearing underneath. Don’t let tiredness be your only expression. Signs of aging are accelerated by heredity, exposure to sunlight, smoking, salt intake and deficiencies in diet.

At Laser Refractive and Cosmetic Centers of Ohio Eye Alliance, Dr. Sanjeev Dewan can help you bring that sparkle back to your eyes with Eyelid Surgery or Blepharoplasty. Over the years, Dr. Dewan has become renowned as a highly accomplished provider of eyelid surgery for patients in the greater Canton, Alliance, and Youngstown areas including Stark, Holmes, Mahoning, and Columbiana counties of Northeastern Ohio. He performs this procedure to help patients achieve a more refreshed, energized facial appearance.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Eyelid plastic surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes excess skin by excision, or occasionally, laser resurfacing. If there is excess fat, this is removed simultaneously. Extreme care is taken to not remove too much fat, so a hollowing appearance will not result from eyelid surgery as the patient grows older. Blepharoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for both men and women because of its high level of patient satisfaction. Blepharoplasty can be performed on both the upper and lower eyelids.

  • Who are the best candidates for Blepharoplasty?

Good candidates for eyelid surgery are those that have realistic expectations of the results and are in good physical and mental health. If your eyelids are encroaching upon your field of vision, the procedure may be covered by your medical insurance plan as “medically necessary” surgery. Though surgical correction is appropriate for all ages, it is necessary to consider other medical problems such as allergies or thyroid disorders that may affect the final appearance.

  • What do I need to do Before Blepharoplasty Surgery?

Before you undergo eyelid surgery, you’ll be asked to see our cosmetic surgeon for a complimentary one to one consultation. This consultative process is important, as you’ll be able to discuss the goals of the procedure and learn more in a confidential setting. The surgeon will evaluate the condition and health of your eyes. Specifics regarding your eye health, including sight, tear production, use of contact lenses, use of medications and personal expectations will be discussed. You may also discuss how much correction you’d like with your surgeon. Each person is unique, with individual needs. For example, you may only want to eliminate the bags located in the area of your lower eyelids.

This consultation will allow both you and your surgeon to come to a mutual decision. Together, a plan will be decided on regarding the surgical technique. Specifics of your eyelid surgery will be discussed, such as how to adequately prepare for surgery, details on what the actual surgery entails, and what to expect while you recover. Our cosmetic surgeon will answer any questions or concerns you may have.

  • What can I expect during Blepharoplasty?

After the procedure, you will need a driver to take you home. A little soreness and redness will be present in the treated area. Mild bruising will appear and generally lasts from two to three weeks. Your physician will be available to respond immediately to any concerns you may have while you recover, particularly if you experience any severe pain that cannot be controlled by over the counter medications like Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen. You’ll need to take care of your eyes while you recover. This includes keeping your head elevated and limiting physical exertion. Cold compresses should be applied twice hourly while awake for the first week followed by four times daily for an additional week to reduce swelling and discomfort. A one-pound bag of frozen peas in a one gallon zip lock bag is an inexpensive and very effective cold compress. For a few days following eye surgery, blurring of vision may occur. Your eyes may feel sticky and itchy. You will be prescribed eye drops and ointment to alleviate this. However, you’ll be able to watch television and read about two days following surgery, and in ten you’ll most likely be back at work if it is not too physically strenuous. Stitches are usually removed one to two weeks after the procedure. Sometimes, self-absorbing stitches and tissue glue are used. Most patients experience a more youthful appearance and greater alertness along with improvement in vision. The beneficial effects are seen immediately but the healing process can take up to a year. The results of your eye surgery will last for years and for many, are permanent!

  • Combining Blepharoplasty with Other Procedures

At Laser Refractive and Cosmetic Centers of Ohio Eye Alliance, patients are offered a range of highly effective facial rejuvenation and beautification procedures. Depending on the unique needs and desires of each patient, Dr. Dewan may recommend a combination of eyelid surgery with other procedures to achieve the best possible results. Some of the treatments that can be used to complement blepharoplasty include Juvederm collagen filler or Botox for wrinkles.

How does Juvéderm® XC work?

Juvéderm® is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the human body that is gradually lost with aging. The result is folds in the face and loss of suppleness. Injection of collagen filler into the skin provides patients with a smoother, suppler facial appearance. The final aesthetic outcome of Juvéderm® XC is apparent immediately with further improvement apparent in a few days following treatment, with effects lasting from six months up to two years, after which the hyaluronic acid is safely absorbed by the body.

  • How Is Juvéderm® XC Administered?

Juvéderm is injected into the dense inner layer of the skin, which is composed of a complex network of nerves and blood vessels. Juvéderm® XC is infused with lidocaine to improve comfort during treatment.

The treatment usually takes between 20 to 30 minutes. Some patients may experience minor swelling and/or bruising at the injection site for one to two days. Patients who wish to maintain the results of Juvéderm® require follow-up injections. Juvéderm® does not require any recovery time, and patients may proceed with their daily routine immediately following treatment.

Our gifted oculoplastic surgeon has helped many facial rejuvenation patients in Northeast Ohio achieve stunning aesthetic results with Juvéderm®.

During your appointment, our physicians will help you determine whether Juvéderm® is the best option for you. If you are concerned about fine lines around the eyes, he may recommend injections of Botox. However, if you have extensive wrinkles and deep lines around the eyes, you might benefit from a surgical treatment, such as blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery at Ohio Eye Alliance.

Juvéderm Voluma® XC

Is volume loss in the cheeks making you look older? As you age, it’s not just about lines and wrinkles. Your cheeks also lose volume and the skin may sag. This is caused by natural loss of volume in the cheek area, or what the experts call age-related midface volume loss. Juvéderm Voluma® XC is designed to add volume beneath the skin’s surface, which provides lift and contour to the cheek area. A more youthful profile starts with the apples of your cheeks.

Botox for Wrinkles

A combination of factors can cause facial lines. It’s not just about the cellular changes that may occur, or reduction of collagen, or damage caused by free radicals from the sun and the environment. Botox is a very popular cosmetic treatment for patients
who wish to decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth, eyes and forehead.

Ohio Eye Alliance is proud to have Dr. Sanjeev Dewan provide Botox for our patients in the greater Canton, Alliance and Youngstown areas including Stark, Holmes, Mahoning and Columbiana counties of Northeastern Ohio. Botox was created for the correction
of misalignment in children and adults, and was originally known as “Oculinum”. It was only available to Pediatric Ophthalmologists like Dr. Dewan and was also used for treatment of Blepharospasm, or uncontrollable lid spasm and closure. Only later was
Botox used routinely for the treatment of unwanted wrinkles.

How does Botox® work?

Repeated muscle contractions from frowning, squinting or raising eyebrows cause skin to furrow and fold, gradually resulting in the formation of facial lines. BOTOX® Cosmetic works beneath the surface and temporarily reduces the underlying muscle activity that causes moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines in adults – to help them look visibly smoother.

Features:

• The first and only treatment FDA-approved to temporarily make moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines look better in adults
• A quick 10-minute treatment with minimal downtime
• You may begin to notice results within 24 to 48 hours for moderate to severe frown lines
• It delivers predictable, subtle results, so you look like you, only with less noticeable facial lines

Kybella

If you’re bothered by the fullness beneath your chin, you’re not alone. According to a 2015 survey conducted by the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, 67% of people said they are bothered by the fat beneath their chin, or what your healthcare provider may refer to as “submental fullness associated with submental fat.”

  • What causes submental fullness?

Submental fullness due to fat beneath the chin can impact a broad range of both male and female adults. Some possible causes are genetics, weight gain and aging. Sometimes, even with diet or exercise, the unwanted fullness beneath your chin may not go away, and it could make you appear older or heavier than you actually are. Fortunately, KYBELLA can help. KYBELLA is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment to improve the appearance of moderate to severe fat beneath the chin by physically destroying fat cells, also known as submental fullness.

How does Kybella work?

KYBELLA® is administered as a series of injections to the treatment area under the chin, destroying fat cells and producing gradual results. Everyone’s chin profile is different, so your physician will tailor* treatment to you. The number of treatment sessions will vary based on the amount of fat under the chin and your treatment goals.

Ditch the Double Chin

You invest in yourself – now invest in your profile. KYBELLA® is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment for adults that permanently destroys fat cells under the chin for a gradually improved profile – whether you have a moderate amount of fullness, or a bit more.

Double the chins, double the self-consciousness. Sometimes they’re an inevitable trait passed down through the family. Sometimes they’re the last thing to go after dieting and getting toned. Either way, they can be treated with Kybella®, the first FDA-approved injectable treatment to reduce fat under the chin.

Kybella® is a non-surgical procedure that mimics the body’s natural fat-absorption process, so you can skip the liposuction. The injection contains a man-made form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring material that helps the body absorb fat. So in no time, your double chin will be a thing of the past. And, so will any issues of self-doubt.
